Microsoft recently announced that as of January 14, 2020, they would end support for their Windows 7 Operating System (OS). Computers running Windows 7 will continue to function, but Microsoft will no longer provide technical support, security updates, or software updates. That’s bad news for Windows 7 users, because without updates, they will be at a considerably greater risk of viruses and other malware.
The good news? AVG will continue protecting our Windows 7 users with new virus definitions and product updates for both AVG AntiVirus FREE and AVG Internet Security. And while Windows 7 users will still benefit from our most up-to-date protection against viruses, malware, and other threats, please be aware that the risk of using an unsupported operating system does increase over time.
With 26% of all PC users using Windows 7, that means millions of PCs are still running it. This includes many of you, and we will continue taking care of your security and privacy.
Many people are happy with the OS they know, so we do not expect to see a rapid migration from Windows 7 to Windows 10. Rather than install Windows 10 on your current computer, Microsoft suggests that you upgrade to a new PC — but we know that not everyone is ready to invest in a new computer. So, while we’re not providing any hard deadlines on how long we will continue our support of Windows 7, we expect it’ll last for at least two more years.
